Compared to the traditional closed MRI, our open MRI is much more spacious and comfortable for patients, and much less likely to result in feelings of claustrophobia, induce panic attacks, or related concerns. Our open MRI allows easier access, as well, for scanning target areas of the body. It is also more accommodating for patients of all sizes.
The MRI Center provides our patients access to the latest and most advanced imaging technology with the convenience of having all their medical needs met in one place. It is staffed by experienced and qualified technicians who provide the highest quality of care and it's kept sterile and clean at all times. The equipment is always properly maintained, and our highly trained staff takes great care to ensure a clean and comfortable environment. What Is an Open MRI?
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. MRI machines use magnets and radio waves to create images of the inside of your body. The MRI machine has a large magnet, which creates a strong magnetic field. This field can align the water molecules in your body. During imaging, a radio wave is sent through your body and the MRI machine measures the strength of the reflected waves. By measuring these waves, it is possible to create a detailed image of the inside of your body.
In a traditional, capsule-shaped MRI machine, the magnet surrounds you as you lay on a table completely inside the machine. An open MRI, on the other hand, contains a powerful magnet at the top and bottom of the machine, so the sides of the machine can remain open and nonconfining.
MRI scans are used to help doctors diagnose various medical conditions. These scans are also often used to plan treatments for specific conditions. MRI scans very safe, and most people will not experience any side effects from them.
Since MRI machines use strong magnets, they may not be appropriate for everyone, such as those with pacemakers. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you are considering a scan. What to Expect During Your MRI
When you arrive for your MRI, a member of our team will greet and escort you to the exam room. The exam room is a sterile environment that is designed to minimize the risk of infection. Once you are in the exam room, one of our technologists will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
You will be asked to remove any jewelry or clothing that contains metal, as well as any eyeglasses or hearing aids. You will also not be able to wear articles of clothing with metal buttons or zippers. A gown will be provided for you to change into. If you have a pacemaker or aneurysm clips in the brain, please disclose this information to your provider and technician as soon as possible. The maximum weight allowed into the MRI machine is 450 pounds.
The technologist will help you onto the MRI table, which will slide into the machine. The MRI machine is large and cylindrical and may make loud noises during your exam. An MRI scan takes approximately 30 minutes. During this time, you will be asked to remain still. Once the scan is complete, you will be escorted out.
